One of the best places on the coast for professional and extreme windsurfing
Los Canos de Meca is by far the most important area when it comes to surfing on the Costa de le Luz. It’s an ideal spot for wave, wind and kite surfing. The waves here are a lot more consistent than in nearby Tarifa (the windsurfing capital of Europe). But beware, the currents and swells can get very strong. It's ideal for professional or advanced surfers, but can be dangerous for beginners.
One of the best spots is right in front of the first line apartments to the east of the lighthouse. The seabed is rocky here, but the waves are very strong. The wind is lateral, creating big waves. The best time is winter when we get the biggest swells.
Each year the strong levante winds attract thousands of windsurfers from all over the world to Los Canos de Meca. The official windsurf championships have been held here on a number of occasions.
When the wind is too strong in Tarifa, many winsurfers take the 45 minuete drive down to Los Canos. The only problem is the lack of space. Los Canos is a lot smaller than Los Lances, in Tarifa. It can get very crowded too.
Los Canos is highly regarded, and well recognised as one of the best spots on the coast for professional or extreme windsurfing.
When the waves are small in Tarifa, you are normally guaranteed to have larger ones in Los Canos or nearby El Palmar. Wavesurfers and bodyboarders from Tarifa often take advantage of this. Moderate to strong levantes can produce exceptionally clean waves. If they're big in Tarifa, they'll be bigger in Los Canos.
